Chart 3.3 - Distribution Of State Income Eligibility Limits As A Percentage Of State Median Income (SMI)

The bar chart shows the distribution of State income eligibility limits as a percentage of State median income (SMI) for those states reporting. Most States have continued to establish income eligibility limits substantially below the levels permissible in Federal regulations. Eight States extend eligibility to families whose income is at 80 percent of SMI or higher; 14 States make eligible families with incomes between 50-59 percent of SMI; and all but one State reported income eligibility limits of 40 percent of SMI or higher.
